How it works
Find the host
We look up which network owns the server's IP address and read the response headers, which name managed hosts such as Kinsta, WP Engine, Netlify or Shopify. When a CDN sits in front, we say so.
Time the first byte
Our fetch from Frankfurt records how long the server takes to start answering. Lighthouse and, where available, Chrome's real-user data add their own numbers beside it.
Compare with peers
Every night we compute the median and slowest-quarter first-byte time of all sites we checked on each host, anonymously. Your number is shown next to them once a host has 50 sites.
One measurement from one location. A single slow answer can be a busy moment, so check twice before you decide. Behind a CDN the origin host is hidden, and there is no fair comparison to make.

Is this really free?
Yes. getReport is funded by donations, not plans, and the host lookup uses free public data.
My server is slower than most sites on the same host. What now?
Then the host is not the limit; something on your site is. Turn on full-page caching first. On WordPress, look for slow plugins and database queries (Query Monitor shows them). If the site is already cached and lean, ask your host for a bigger plan or a server closer to your visitors.
Where do the comparison numbers come from?
From the latest getReport check of every site on that host in the last 90 days, one per site, recomputed every night. We store only counts and percentiles, never which sites they came from, and show nothing until a host has 50 different sites.
Why is there no comparison for my site?
Either the page is served through a CDN such as Cloudflare, which hides the server behind it, or fewer than 50 sites on your host have been checked so far. The page tells you which, and how many sites there are.
Why Frankfurt?
Every site is timed from the same place, so the numbers compare fairly with each other. Visitors far from both your server and Frankfurt will see different absolute times; a CDN narrows that gap.
Do you store my results?
The report is kept for 12 months at its shareable link. Reports are not listed publicly and carry a noindex tag. Your first-byte time joins the anonymous host numbers without your domain.
