How it works

AVIF encoding takes several seconds per photo, so a large batch in AVIF takes a while. WebP is the faster choice.

Is this really free?

Yes. getReport is funded by donations, not plans. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so there is no limit and nothing to pay for.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding happen in a Web Worker in your browser. The page downloads the codecs once; your files never leave your computer.

WebP or AVIF?

WebP works in every current browser and encodes quickly; it is the safe default. AVIF is usually noticeably smaller at the same quality and is supported by current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, but encoding takes several seconds per photo. For a hero image, AVIF is worth the wait.

Why compress before you upload?

The largest element on most slow pages is a photo uploaded straight from a phone or a stock site: 3,000 pixels wide and 2 MB, shown at 1,200. Scaling it to the size you need and saving it as WebP typically removes most of the bytes with no visible difference, which is the fastest way to improve Largest Contentful Paint. Online compressors either cap the free tier or upload your files to their servers. The same codecs run in your browser, so there is no reason for either.

What quality should I use?

Around 75 for photos in WebP or JPEG, 60–65 for AVIF. Look at the result at 100 % zoom on a detailed area (hair, text, foliage); go up five points if you see smearing.
