Fix these first

From the example above. Check your own site to get the fixes that apply to it.

  1. Warning: Open Graph image is 800×420 — below 1200×630

Facebook and LinkedIn crop or shrink images smaller than 1200×630 px, so your preview looks blurry or cut off.

How to fix it: Export the share image at 1200×630 px (1.91:1) under 1 MB.

What this tool checks

The Open Graph and Twitter card tags, plus the share image, fetched and measured.

  • Open Graph title

Checks the headline shown when your link is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack or WhatsApp.

  • Open Graph description

Checks the short text under the headline of a shared link, so the card says what the page offers.

  • Open Graph image

Checks for a share image, so links posted on social apps show a picture instead of plain text.

  • Open Graph image size

Checks the share image is at least 1200×630 px, so previews are not blurry or cropped.

  • Open Graph image reachable

Checks social apps can actually download your share image from an absolute https address.

  • og:url and canonical URL match

Checks og:url matches the canonical URL, so share counts are not split between two addresses.

  • Open Graph type

Checks og:type says whether the page is a website, article or product, which shapes the card layout.

  • Twitter card type

Checks for a valid twitter:card type, without which X shows a shared link as plain text.

  • Image for X (Twitter) cards

Checks X has an image to show, from twitter:image or og:image, so the card is not text only.

  • Facebook App ID

Optional tag that links the page to a Facebook app so you can see share statistics.

  • Link preview rendering

Shows how your link looks on Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Slack before you share it.

How it works

  1. Read the tags

We read the Open Graph title, description, image, og:url, og:type, the Twitter card type and image, and the Facebook App ID.

  2. Measure the image

The share image is fetched and measured, not guessed from the tag, and compared with the recommended 1200×630 pixels.

  3. Compare with the canonical

og:url is compared with the page's canonical URL, so shares point to the address you want counted.

We read the tags as they are now. Facebook, LinkedIn and others cache previews, so an old card can show until you ask them to scrape again.

Questions

Is this really free?

Yes. getReport is funded by donations, not plans. This tool runs the full report and shows you the part it is about; the complete report with all seven modules is one click away, also free.

Facebook still shows the old preview. Why?

Facebook caches previews. After fixing the tags, paste the URL into the Sharing Debugger and click "Scrape again". LinkedIn has a similar Post Inspector.

What image size should I use?

1200×630 pixels, under 1 MB, JPEG or PNG. That renders sharp on Facebook, LinkedIn and X and is cropped least.

Can I run this on many sites?

You can check 10 sites every 10 minutes and 50 a day from one connection. For more at once, the bulk URL checker and the bulk PageSpeed checker take lists of URLs; a free API is in development. Cached reports never count against the limit.

Why do link previews matter?

Most links are shared in chats and feeds where the preview card is the whole pitch. A missing image or a truncated title means the link looks broken and nobody taps it. The tags are a few lines in the head, and most CMSs fill them from the page's SEO settings once they are enabled.
