How it works
Collect the links
Every <a href> on the page is collected, up to 100 links on the same host and 50 to other sites, without duplicates, anchors or mailto links.
Request each one
Each link is requested with HEAD, or GET when a server refuses HEAD, following redirects to the final status.
Sort the results
Links that answer 4xx, 5xx or nothing at all count as broken. Redirects are listed so you can update them to the final URL.

Is this really free?

Can it check my whole site?

A link shows 403 but works in my browser.
Some sites block automated requests. The tool retries with a GET and a browser-like user agent; a persistent 403 usually means the target blocks all bots, which also affects search engines.
Can I run this on many sites?
You can check 10 sites every 10 minutes and 50 a day from one connection. For more at once, the bulk URL checker and the bulk PageSpeed checker take lists of URLs; a free API is in development. Cached reports never count against the limit.
Why do broken links matter?
A link to a missing page is a dead end for the visitor and a wasted crawl for Google. They build up quietly: retired products, renamed posts, partner sites that shut down. Redirected links still work, but each one costs an extra round trip and passes a little less ranking signal. After a domain, https or trailing-slash change, most internal links redirect until someone updates them.
