What this tool checks
The sitemap file against the protocol, a sample of the pages it lists, and whether your page is in it.
Sitemap in robots.txt
Checks robots.txt points to your XML sitemap, so crawlers find new pages sooner.
XML sitemap
Checks for a working sitemap, the list of pages you want indexed, so new and deep pages are found faster.
Sitemap format
Checks the sitemap is well-formed with absolute URLs and valid dates, so Google can actually read it.
Sitemap URL status
Checks a sample of sitemap URLs answer 200, since redirects and 404s there waste crawl time and trust.
Page listed in sitemap
Checks this page is in the sitemap, so Google spots updates to it sooner.
robots.txt file
Checks for the file that tells crawlers which parts of the site to skip and where your sitemap is.

How it works
Find the sitemaps
We fetch up to three sitemaps declared in robots.txt and /sitemap.xml, gunzip them when needed and parse them with a strict XML parser.
Validate the file
The root element, namespace, absolute same-host URLs, W3C lastmod dates, changefreq, priority, repeated URLs and the 50,000 URL limit are checked.
Test the listed pages
Up to 25 listed URLs are requested to confirm they answer 200 without redirecting, and you see whether the page you entered is in the sitemap.
Only 25 listed URLs are status-checked per run, and image and video sitemap extensions are tolerated but not validated yet.
Questions
Is this really free?
Yes. getReport is funded by donations, not plans. This tool runs the full report and shows you the part it is about; the complete report with all seven modules is one click away, also free.
My site has a sitemap index. Is that checked?
Yes. The index is validated and its child sitemaps are counted. Status checks of listed pages sample the first sitemap that lists pages; a full crawl of every child arrives with the site crawl milestone.
What about HTML sitemaps or image and video sitemaps?
HTML sitemaps are ordinary pages and are not part of the protocol. Image and video extensions are tolerated but not validated yet.
How many URLs can it read?
Up to 50,000 URLs and 5 MB per file, which is the protocol limit for URLs. Larger files are reported as too big.
Do you store my results?
The report is kept for 12 months at its shareable link so you can come back to it. Reports are not listed publicly and carry a noindex tag; nothing about your visitors is collected.
Why does a valid sitemap matter?
A sitemap is the fastest way to tell Google what exists and what changed. One malformed date or a relative URL and Search Console reports "Couldn't fetch", after which the file is ignored until someone notices. Sitemaps that list redirected or deleted pages teach Google to trust the file less, so new pages are picked up more slowly. Keeping only live, canonical URLs in it is worth more than any priority value.
