Your Cloudflare settings, step by step
6 steps, 2 to change.
Checked against Cloudflare’s docs on 8 October 2026. Cloudflare renames settings often; if a name differs in your dashboard, follow the docs link on the step.
1. Set the AI bot policies (Change)
They apply even if you never opened them: since 15 September 2026 Cloudflare blocks Training and Agent bots on pages with ads by default. Agent bots are the ones that fetch a page when someone asks an assistant about it.
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your site, go to Security Settings and filter by Bot traffic.
- Select Configure AI bot policies (the older setting was called Block AI bots).
- Search: Allow (do not block). Agent: Allow (do not block). Training: Block (on all pages).
- Training also covers crawlers that collect for both training and search. Check AI Crawl Control to see which crawlers that is for your site.
2. Decide on the managed robots.txt (Check)
It disallows training crawlers only and adds the Content Signals line search=yes, ai-train=no, so it fits your goal. It does not touch search bots.
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your site, go to Security Settings and filter by Bot traffic.
- Turn on the preference to block training in robots.txt if you want training crawlers asked to stay out.
- Open yoursite/robots.txt to see the result: Cloudflare puts its lines before yours, in one file.
3. Test Bot Fight Mode, and turn it off if it challenges AI bots (Check)
Cloudflare says no WAF custom rule or Page Rule can skip Bot Fight Mode, and its docs do not say whether verified AI bots get through. If they are challenged, turning it off is the only fix on the Free plan.
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your site and go to AI Crawl Control to see which AI crawlers reach your site and which are blocked.
- If the search bots you want are missing or blocked: In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your site, go to Security Settings and filter by Bot traffic. Go to Bot fight mode and turn it off.
4. Add one WAF rule that lets verified AI bots through (Change)
Super Bot Fight Mode, Browser Integrity Check, Under Attack mode, rate limiting and your own rules can all challenge AI bots, and most AI bots run no JavaScript, so they cannot pass a challenge. One Skip rule placed first lets verified AI bots past all of them.
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your site and go to the Security rules page.
- Select Create rule, then Custom rules.
- Name the rule, select Edit expression and paste the expression below.
- Choose the action Skip and tick what to skip.
- Deploy it and move it to the top of the list. The Free plan has 5 custom rules, Pro 20, Business 100.
Rule name: Let verified AI bots through(cf.verified_bot_category in {"AI Search" "AI Assistant"})Action: Skip. Tick: All remaining custom rules, Super Bot Fight Mode rules, Browser Integrity Check, Security Level and Rate limiting rules (only the ones offered on your plan). Place it first.
cf.verified_bot_category only matches bots Cloudflare has verified, so a fake GPTBot user agent does not get through.
5. Keep Browser Integrity Check, skipped for AI bots (Keep)
It challenges visitors with no user agent or an unusual one. The Skip rule above already passes verified AI bots, so you can leave it on for everyone else.
- Nothing to change if you added the Skip rule with Browser Integrity Check ticked.
- To turn it off for one path instead, use a Configuration Rule.
6. Optional: a WAF rule that blocks training bots (Check)
The AI bot policies above already do this. Use a rule instead when you need exceptions, such as allowing training bots on your blog only.
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your site and go to the Security rules page.
- Select Create rule, then Custom rules.
- Name the rule, select Edit expression and paste the expression below.
- Choose the action Block and deploy it.
Rule name: Block AI training bots(cf.verified_bot_category in {"AI Crawler"}) or (http.user_agent contains "GPTBot") or (http.user_agent contains "ClaudeBot") or (http.user_agent contains "CCBot")Action: Block
Then check the result: the AI crawler check shows what your robots.txt tells each AI bot, and the robots.txt AI rules generator writes the robots.txt side.

What the Cloudflare AI bot settings checklist covers
Checked against Cloudflare's docs on 8 October 2026. Worked out in your browser; nothing is sent to us or to Cloudflare.
AI bot policies
The Search, Agent and Training settings that replaced Block AI bots, and the default that blocks two of them on pages with ads.
AI Crawl Control
Allow or block one crawler at a time, on every plan. Blocking there creates a WAF custom rule.
Managed robots.txt
What Cloudflare adds to the top of your robots.txt, and when to turn it off.
Bot Fight Mode
It cannot be skipped by any rule, so the checklist has you test it and says when to turn it off.
One skip rule
A WAF expression with cf.verified_bot_category that lets verified AI bots past Super Bot Fight Mode, Browser Integrity Check, Under Attack mode and rate limits.
A block rule
For blocking every AI bot, an expression by verified category plus user agents that leaves Googlebot and bingbot alone.

How the Cloudflare AI bot settings checklist works
Say what you want
Be found and cited by AI search, allow training too, or block every AI bot.
Tick what is on
Bot Fight Mode, Super Bot Fight Mode, AI Crawl Control, managed robots.txt, WAF and rate limiting rules, Browser Integrity Check, Under Attack mode.
Work down the list
Each step says why, where to click and what to set, with a Copy button for rule expressions and a link to Cloudflare's page for it.
Cloudflare renames settings often and its docs do not say whether Bot Fight Mode lets verified AI bots through, so test the result with AI Crawl Control after each change.
Cloudflare AI bot settings questions
Does Cloudflare block AI crawlers by default?
Partly. Since 15 September 2026 the default AI bot policy blocks Training and Agent bots on pages with ads and allows Search bots. Pages without ads are not blocked by that default, but Bot Fight Mode, Under Attack mode or your own rules can still challenge AI bots.
Does Bot Fight Mode block AI bots?
It can, and you cannot exempt them: Cloudflare says no WAF custom rule or Page Rule can skip Bot Fight Mode. Its docs do not say whether verified AI bots pass. Open AI Crawl Control to see which crawlers reach your site, and if the search bots you want do not, turn Bot Fight Mode off.
How do I allow AI bots in Cloudflare?
Set the AI bot policies for Search and Agent to Allow, then add one WAF custom rule with the expression cf.verified_bot_category in AI Search and AI Assistant and the action Skip, placed first. That lets verified AI bots past Super Bot Fight Mode, Browser Integrity Check, Security Level and rate limiting rules.
What is cf.verified_bot_category?
A field in Cloudflare's rules language that holds the category of a bot Cloudflare has verified, such as AI Search, AI Assistant, AI Crawler or Search Engine Crawler. Because it only matches verified bots, a rule built on it is not fooled by a scraper that copies GPTBot's user agent.
What does Cloudflare's managed robots.txt add?
Disallow lines for training crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot and Applebot-Extended, and a Content Signals line saying search yes, AI training no. Cloudflare puts them before your own rules, in one file. It does not block AI search bots.
How many WAF custom rules do I get on the Free plan?
Five on the Free plan, 20 on Pro, 100 on Business and 1,000 on Enterprise. The skip rule and the block rule here each take one. Rules that use regex need Business or Enterprise, so the expressions here use in and contains only.
