Problem: 15 images have no alt attribute
Alt text is how Google Images and screen readers understand a picture.
How to fix it: Describe each meaningful image in a short alt attribute ("Blue running shoe, side view").Warning: 15 images have no alternative text
Alt text is what screen readers speak and what appears when an image does not load.
How to fix it: Add alt="…" describing what the image shows, in one sentence, to every informative image.
What the alt text checker checks
Every img on the page, read the way a screen reader and Google Images read it, plus the accessibility scan.
Images without alt text
Finds images with no alt text, which Google Images and screen readers need to understand them.
Images marked decorative
Lists images with empty alt text, which is fine for decoration but a lost chance for product photos.
Image alt text
Checks images have alternative text for screen readers, broken images and image search.
File names as alt text
Finds alt text like IMG_1234 or photo.jpg, which tells screen readers and Google Images nothing.
Alt text length
Flags alt text over 125 characters; screen readers read it in one go and nobody needs a paragraph.
Repeated alt text
Finds the same alt text on different images, usually a theme default or a copied product name.
Image links without a name
Finds links whose only content is an image with alt="", so the link has no name at all.
Broken images
Finds images that fail to load and leave an empty space or placeholder for every visitor.

How the alt text checker works
Read every image
We fetch the page and read each img tag with its alt attribute, whether it sits alone in a link, in a figure with a caption, or is marked presentational.
Judge each alt text
Missing, empty, a file name like IMG_1234, longer than 125 characters, or the same words on different images; the accessibility scan adds what it finds in the rendered page.
Draft the fix
Each flagged image gets a draft alt attribute from its caption, its link or its file name, and the whole list downloads as CSV for whoever edits the images.
One page per check; the drafts are starting points from the words the page already has, not descriptions of the picture itself.
Alt text checker questions
Why does the checker flag alt text over 125 characters?
Under about 125 characters, one sentence that says what the image shows and why it is there. Screen readers read alt text in one go and some older ones stop at 125 characters, which is why the checker flags longer ones. Put the detail into the caption or the body text instead, and never start with "image of" or "picture of": the screen reader already says it is an image.
Is a file name as alt text a problem?
Yes. IMG_1234 or hero-banner.jpg tells a screen reader user nothing and gives Google Images nothing to match a search against. It usually comes from a CMS that fills the alt with the file name on upload. The checker spots camera names, names ending in an image extension and alt text equal to the file name, and drafts a replacement from the file name words when there are any.
When should alt text be empty?
When the image is decoration: a divider, a background flourish, an icon next to text that already says the same thing. An empty alt attribute, alt="", tells screen readers to skip it. A missing attribute is different: then the screen reader reads the file name instead. The one case where empty is wrong is a link whose only content is the image, because the link ends up with no name at all.
Should product photos have alt text for Google Images?
For image search, directly: Google Images relies on the alt text and the words around the image to understand it, so product photos with good alt text can appear for product searches. For the page itself the effect is small, but an image with no alt also fails the accessibility checks that count toward a usable site. Write for the person who cannot see the image; the search engine benefits from the same words.
Can I fix alt text in bulk?
This checker gives you the list and a draft per image as CSV, which is the part a tool can do from outside. Writing the alt text into the pages needs access to the site: in WordPress, the media library has an alt text field per image, and the getReport plugin will add a bulk editor for exactly this list. Until then, the CSV is the hand-off to whoever edits the content.
Is this alt text checker free?
Yes, with no sign-up. getReport is funded by donations, not plans. The check is part of the full report, which runs the accessibility scan and six other modules on the same page, also free.
